Junk Music WorkshopWakefield Music Services strives to provide excellence in music education where every participant is encouraged to achieve the highest standards. More than 3,000 children ranging in age from 7-19 years receive instrumental tuition in Wakefield schools, provided by a team of specialist, experienced teaching staff.

In addition to this, we are also able to offer to schools a wide range of training opportunities for teachers and pupils. As well as the programme of courses in the CPD brochure, Wakefield Music Services is able to offer high quality bespoke CPD, which responds to your school's particular needs. Many schools have already benefited from the following packages:

  • Individual consultations with Music Leaders and Heads of Music
  • Whole Staff CPD - twilight, half day, full day sessions
  • Extended groups e.g. governors, parents

These sessions can be arranged during or after school hours and can be held either in school or at Manygates Music Centre. We can also offer specific consultation on:
  • Curriculum planning including development of policies and schemes
  • Resourcing of music
  • Post inspection work on music issues
  • Recruiting and selecting music staff
  • External monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning

In addition to the above we also run Music Workshops in schools for classes of all ages. These lively and exciting sessions involve pupil participation from start to finish and include the loan of musical instruments, CD's, and teacher support materials. The workshop themes include Junk percussion, African drumming, Samba, Rhythm and Rhyme, China, Nursery Rhymes, Music and Art, Aboriginal Music, Space and many more. However, alternative themes can be tailored to meet the school's requirements.

The School Improvement Officer for Wakefield Music Services is able to offer classroom support in primary schools where music has been identified as a focus in the SDP or where Ofsted has judged there to be a weakness.

The cost of bespoke work and Music Workshops in Schools is £75 per hour, £250 for half a day or £500 for a full day. For institutions outside of Wakefield MDC, the cost is £600 for a day. Please contact Geraldine Gaunt, School Improvement Officer: Music Services on (01924) 303306 if you would like to arrange any of the above support.
