The final concert of the Wakefield Youth Symphony Orchestra's season, arrived with a touch of sadness with the news that Nick Meredith, the long standing conductor of the group, was stepping down from his post.
Nick has been conducting the orchestra since 1995 and many students have benefited from his talents and ability as Musical Director in this time. Geraldine Gaunt, Adviser for Music Services, commented "Nick's charistmatic style has been inspirational and he will be sadly missed."
Nick Meredith's final concert with the Orchestra in Wakefield Cathedral followed on from the annual week-long course and featured an ambitious but exciting programme. The opening 'Peterloo Overture' by Malcolm Arnold allowed the orchestra to revel in a variety of emotion, from the tense and turbulent battle scenes to the defiant chorale ending. Particular mention must go to the orchestra's percussion section here for the quality of tone and control they achieved, heightening the emotional impact of the piece.
Following on from this was a truly virtuosic performance of Derek Bourgeois' 'Concerto for Trombone' by Andrew Gourlay. A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Andrew was only the third performer to tackle this work in public performance following the premiere of the piece given by Christian Lindberg. Although the piece is technically very difficult for both performer and orchestra, the performance was spirited and exuberant, being enjoyed by an appreciative audience.
Finally, the orchestra performed Tchaikovsky's momentous Fifth Symphony. A piece of music that requires a lot of musical maturity to play successfully, it was bravely performed and featured some excellent solo work from members of the Woodwind and French Horn sections.
Rehearsals for the new season start on Friday 9th September with Lee Benstead taking over the post of Musical Director. In addition, Carl White and Lee Muncaster will also be joining the staff as tutors for French Horn and Brass.
