13/08/2005 - Our journey on the White Pass and Yukon railroad takes us 28 miles up to Fraser in British Columbia.  Arriving at the top of the pass our train travels through a post glacial landscape strewn with lakes.   As we get off the train I am immediately  attracted by the quality of the light reflecting from the still clear surface of the lake and this young woman framed among the trees as she sets off across the lake.

From this quiet reflective scene it is hard to imagine the frenzied activity going on behind me, where hundreds of people mill around looking for the coach that will take them back to Skagway.

In 1898-1899 thirty thousand goldfield `stampeders' travelled onto Bennett (a further 12 miles) where they spent the winter building makeshift rafts and boats to take them across Lake Bennett and down the river to the goldfields.
