11/08/05 - The Mendenhall Glacier flows out of the Juneau ice-field on the Coastal Mountain Range of Alaska and is the first glacier we visit.  We take the public service bus to the nearest stop to the glacier and then walk the additional mile and a half to the visitors' centre.  No public transport system in Juneau, the capital of Alaska, goes where you need it to!  The nearest bus to the ferry terminal is 2.5 miles away and no public transport serves the airport.

Mini ice-bergs float in the lake at the foot of the glacier while the glacier itself looks as though soot has been poured over it.  (A black algae which grows on the surface of the ice during the summer.)

Last year this glacier receded 300ft.  Prior to this the average rate of recession was 70ft.  Could this be more evidence of global warming?
