n-Juneau-EPV0007

11/08/2005 - Our evening flight to Juneau over Chatham Sound, Admiralty Island and Stephen's Passage in a small six-seater plane is incredible.  Below we spot whales making their way south  down the sound, while the huge white blobs that are cruise ships make their way north heading for Juneau.

A ride  up the Mount Roberts tramway would have enabled me to capture a view of Juneau in its tight mountain setting.  In the absence of that option I chose this photograph to show how the Coastal Mountains rise up directly above Juneau, a city which is built  on a narrow platform along the edge of the Gastineau Channel.
