Teaching and Learning Ideas

Key Stage Four Work

  • Use the weather data to compare the weather experienced at Edinburgh and Cambourne on the 4th of January.    Say what was similar and what was different about the weather at each place.

  •  Use the Satellite Images and your own knowledge to explain the different weather conditions.

  • Print out the satellite image for 12.00 on the 4th January.  Annotate the image with the following:

Warm Front                                 Cold Front                                 Warm sector                                   Cold sector

  • Use synoptic chart symbols to show the likely weather conditions at four different points on the image.

Key Stage Three Work

  • Use the maximum temperature and rainfall data to draw a climate graph for each of the four places.

Use the data for the 3rd of January to make a graph to compare the amount of rainfall and the maximum temperature for each place.  Answer the following questions:

(i) Which place was the warmest?                   (ii) Which place was the coldest?             (iii) Which place had the most rainfall?

  • Suggestion – transfer the data onto an Excel Spreadsheet and use this to plot your graphs.

  • Print out the satellite image for 12.00 on the 4th January.

Draw on the cold front and warm front.

Prepare a weather forecast for TV.  Use the satellite images to help you to predict the likely weather conditions.  Create your own weather symbols to show what the weather will be like over the UK.
