Understanding Landscapes and a Planning Issue

This work is worth 10% of your final grade.  It is impotrant that  you do it to the best of your ability and that you take care with spelling, punctuation and grammar.  It is also important that you meet the deadlines set by your teacher.

 

1. On sheet 1 there is the landscape scene of Winnats Pass.  Annotate the picture to show where you can see or would expect to see the following:-

  • Limestone Gorge
  • Terracettes
  • Bedding planes and joints
  • Absence of surface drainage
  • Scar and scree slopes
  • Dry stone wall
  • Rill gullies
  • Road

                                               

2. On sheet 2 the same landscape is shown.  Label it to show the geology along with past and present processes:-

  • Limestone
  • Soil creep
  • Ancient River* & fluvio-glacial action (i.e. the effect of glacial meltwater)
  • Carbonation (i.e. the chemical action of acidic rainwater on limestone).
  • Freeze - thaw action
  • Overgrazing
  • Rill action
  • Human construction

* Approx. 350 million years ago.

3. Produce an annotated diagram or series of annotated diagrams to explain how the landscape at Winnats Pass has been influenced by:-

  • The geology

  • Past processes

  • Present processes

4. Use the information on resource sheet 2 to suggest reasons why some people consider that the present information centre in Castleton is unsuitable and that a new centre is now necessary in a different location.

5. Study resource sheet 3.  Use it to answer the following questions:-

        a) Two applications have been received to build a new information centre.  What was the first thing that the applicants had to do?

        b) What action takes place between weeks 2 and 5?

        c) Describe the variety of things that can happen after  5 weeks.

Your teacher will discuss the following task with you during one of yor lessons.  You will then have the rest of the lesson and homework to prepare your answer, which will be written up during the next lesson.  Use all of the resource sheets to help you.

6. Imagine that you are a planning officer and a decision has to be made from one of the three following alternatives:-

    a) Accept plan NPHAK 099029 by TMS Ltd for conversion of the industrial buildings and development of a large scale          retail outlet.

    b) Accept plan NPHAK 0399032 by PDNP  for a small visitors centre in the car park.

    c) To refuse planning permission for any new centre and signpost the present one so that it is more easy to find from the main car park.

Which would you choose and why?  Why do you consider your choice better than the alternatives?  What stipulations would you make if you were to grant permission to one of the two applicants?
