The foundation stage is a  stage of education for children aged from three to five. It is called the Foundation Stage because it gives children secure foundations for later learning. Early experiences affect children's attitudes to learning, so it is important that they are enjoyable and suitable for their stage of development. Through play children will develop  skills in six areas of learning.  These areas are communication, language and literacy, mathematical development, physical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, creative development and personal, social and emotional development.  The  Early learning goals  are a series of aims within these six area of learning which most children will have reached by the end of the foundation stage. The last year of the foundation stage is sometimes called the reception year. Children in Crofton start full-time education in the term that they become five.
