Where is Lucy?

This web page is intended for use by young children, who are in the early stages of learning to read. It tells the story of Lucy, who is never where you expect her to be, or doing what you expect her to be doing. 

My dog Lucy came to live with us in August as I moved to Early Years in September. As part of our " getting to know you" work we exchanged information about our homes, families and pets. "What did Lucy do last night?" has become part of our morning news ritual. We have used the Sherston Talking book Doris the Dotty Dog a great deal because the children like it so much.  I hope that this can be used in a similar way and that we can develop more stories not only about Lucy but about the children's own pets.

The text is simple and repetitive and uses key words from the National Literacy Strategy list of words that reception children should learn.

Early learning goals say that children should:

• have opportunities to communicate thoughts and feelings and ideas to an adult and to each other.
• have the opportunity to see hear, use, see and read familiar words.
• engage in activities that are imaginative and enjoyable.
• have the opportunity to link sounds to letters.                                                                                                                                        Children should also be given the opportunity to: 
• read a range of books, on their own, with another child or an adult.
• re-tell stories, sometimes using props such as puppets.
• write about stories they have read.
• make their own books to include in the class book corner.

This web site can be used to support work in literacy but could also be used as part of  a topic about  pets or animals.
