Wheldon Infant School has been taking part in the Changing Places Project in Castleford and Airedale. The project was given a small Geographical Association/ DfES bursary to support the formation of a local network of primary geography co-ordinators. The teachers who attended the project received a 1-5 user licence for the ICT programme Local Studies. This linked to an LEA priority to encourage more schools to use digital mapping and simple GIS (Geographical Information Systems).
The Foundation Stage teacher from the school attended the meetings and decided to focus her geography on the area where her children live. This aspect of work linked to the making of the Channel 4 TV programme `The Castleford Project'. The three and four year old children in the class used the ICT programme to record their knowledge of the local area. Both Amy aged 4 and Eve aged 3 are particular knowledgeable about their locality and accurately identify and locate physical and human features. Please click on the thumbnails to see their drawings.
